Welcoming Spring at the April Open Mic

IMG_20170417_203228On Monday, April 17, a good time was had by all as the DC Cabaret Network hosted its first Spring open mic at The Black Squirrel in Adams Morgan.  As always, we were warmly welcomed by The Black Squirrel and their bartender “Alexander the Great,” so self described.

Jill Parsons was on hand to very capably coordinate the sound and Howard Breitbart was at the piano, adding his masterful and inspiring accompaniments to the proceedings.

We had a great turn out of singers – 5 men & 5 women – sharing terrific, varied, and often quite challenging songs. See the list of songs and singers below and please be sure to join us for our next open mic, also at The Black Squirrel, on Monday, May 8.

Between blacksquirrelnow and then, we hope to see you at the 3rd installment of the DCCN’s “4@4” on Sunday, April 30th at 4 pm, upstairs on the third floor at – where else? – The Black Squirrel.  4 singers – Michael Miyazaki, Shannon Polly, Christy Trapp & Tracy Simpson – will each offer 20 minutes of song, directed by Lonny Smith and musically directed by Jeff Hamlin.

DC Cabaret Network Hosts “Out of the Box” — A Showcase of the Songs and Music of Dennis Livingston

The DC Cabaret Network is hosting an exciting showcase of the songs of composer Dennis Livingston called Out of the Box, on Sunday, November 18, 2012, at the Black Fox Lounge.

Ten singers will bring to life his songs about contemporary life, love and loss.

The showcase will be held at the Black Fox Lounge at 1723 Connecticut Avenue, NW from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday, Nov. 18.   Metro: Dupont Circle Station

Livingston’s music has been featured in numerous showcases and sung by cabaret and jazz artists around the country. The Stories in my Mind: The Songs of Dennis Livingston, recently ran for four performances at the Metropolitan Room in New York City.

George Fulginiti-Shakar, two-time Helen Hayes winner and musical director at Arena Stage and other venues around town, serves as musical director for the event.  Alex Tang, keyboard player for Signature Theatre, Arena Stage, National Theatre and many other theatres, will also be accompanying singers.

George Fulginiti-Shakar recently said, “This is a great event to be able to showcase a contemporary songwriter writing for today’s audiences.  We featured some of Dennis’s music in one of our highly successful events called Stop the Presses: New Music for Cabaret – and we’re delighted to be able to present a full set of his gems.”

The DC Cabaret Network is a local organization committed to promoting the music of the American songbook and cabaret.  www.dccabaretnetwork.org.  To hear some of Dennis’ songs, check out his website, www.dennislivingston.com

Admission: $15 for paid members of the DC Cabaret Network and $20 for all others. ONLY cash and check will be accepted.
