It’s Showtime! Sheet Music from Stage and Screen @ the Library of Congress

Whether you love the songs of the 1910s or more recent fare, this fascinating sheet music collection from the Library of Congress is a real find. The database includes “hits and flops” from famous Tin Pan Alley songwriters like Irving Berlin, along with manuscript materials from amateur composers. All told, this database contains materials from over 18,000 shows and productions from the 1690s to the present. (Not every item includes complete sheet music, as some of the materials are restricted by copyright laws.) Visitors can search the collection by song title, composer, lyricist, or date of issue. It’s fun to sta rt the journey by typing in the names of some favorite, celebrated composers, such as Jerome Kern, Oscar Hammerstein, and George Gershwin. — from The Scout Report

DC Cabaret Network Hosts “Out of the Box” — A Showcase of the Songs and Music of Dennis Livingston

The DC Cabaret Network is hosting an exciting showcase of the songs of composer Dennis Livingston called Out of the Box, on Sunday, November 18, 2012, at the Black Fox Lounge.

Ten singers will bring to life his songs about contemporary life, love and loss.

The showcase will be held at the Black Fox Lounge at 1723 Connecticut Avenue, NW from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday, Nov. 18.   Metro: Dupont Circle Station

Livingston’s music has been featured in numerous showcases and sung by cabaret and jazz artists around the country. The Stories in my Mind: The Songs of Dennis Livingston, recently ran for four performances at the Metropolitan Room in New York City.

George Fulginiti-Shakar, two-time Helen Hayes winner and musical director at Arena Stage and other venues around town, serves as musical director for the event.  Alex Tang, keyboard player for Signature Theatre, Arena Stage, National Theatre and many other theatres, will also be accompanying singers.

George Fulginiti-Shakar recently said, “This is a great event to be able to showcase a contemporary songwriter writing for today’s audiences.  We featured some of Dennis’s music in one of our highly successful events called Stop the Presses: New Music for Cabaret – and we’re delighted to be able to present a full set of his gems.”
